why does every political argument always end up boiling down to the person being against the war (or whatever) being "Liberal" and the person who supports the government being "conservative"- is thinking really so hard for us that we have to simplify everthing down to "left" vs "right" in order to have some form of discourse? are we, as a society, slowly having our minds funneled into one universal set of ideals? or am i just the only one who doesn't feel like being pegged into one category or the other doesn't necessarily reflect all of my beliefs?

"The whole 'conservative' vs 'liberal' thing is retarded?"

Of course. To the rest of the world, US political "thought" is ludicrous. Angela Merkel in Germany and Canada's Stephen Harper are right wingers in their countries; in the US, they're both "left" of the Democrats.

If the US's politics range between 1 and 10, then the rest of the world ranges from 0 to 100. The US is so narrow and so right wing, the world can't tell any difference between the two parties. The Democrats are far right, not "liberal", and the Republicans are fascists along the lines of Pinochet and Mussolini.

You are right. The world is not that simple, nor should it be. And there are many, many people who agree with you. Libertarians, for example. Check out the World's Smallest Political Quiz from the link below.

It's totally retarded. I'm socially liberal and fiscally conservative, which makes me a libertarian. Both 'sides' see me as being part of the 'other' and are quite intolerant and unthinking.

I agree. George Washington wanted NO political parties when he became president. That way, we would choose government officials on skill rather than party. Political parties are wrong.

I agree. I have a hard time decided which I am. I'm not completely one or the other, but I mix of both.
