walking off my lunch round the lake, I watched a ceremony. A fish was caught, weighed and gently released back in the water. Why don't these guys weigh each other?

Actually, I always thought catching a fish with a hook, then releasing it was rather cruel; since the hook has injured the fish. It must have at least somewhat or the fish wouldn't have been caught by the hook.
The wound from the hook is still present when the fish is released, and apparently fish do feel pain.
But then this seems like scientific research that you are describing, and if it was, then I am sure the catching of the fish, the handling of it, was done as carefully as possible. And the research in all probability was being done to help the fish population overall. Or to study marine, or aquatic ecosystems. Or something along those lines.

If it's sport fishing, then refer to my first statement. It hurts the fish. The sports fishermen are lying about the fish not feeling pain.
Fish also have a way longer memory that most people think.
Both their memories, and whether they feel pain, has been researched scientifically.

It was probably a bass you saw released. Lots of fishermen are the catch and release type. It is the sport, not the fish they want. When we release them, it is for the fun someone else has catching them again. I have heard, I can't prove it, but fish have no nerve endings in their mouth, so they don't feel the hook. And if they swallow a hook, just cut the string as close to the hook as possible, and the digestive juices will make short work of the hook.

I'm sorry but you're an idiot, fish don't feel pain, this has been an established fact for many years. Would you rather they kill the fish and eat it instead? Why not concentrate your bleeding heart on real life matters, like people dieing of hunger every day, or wars killing innocent civilians, or global warming. I guess a stupid fish has more respect than real humans do, LOSER!

LOL Go fishing and when you catch a fish I hope you sit in the boat in a fetal position crying and praying to your god about how you ruined a fishes dinner.
