I have Adobe Photoshop 6.0. This file was originally a .rar file that I extracted from WinRar. Once extracted I used Adobe Photoshop to open but it says "it is not the right kind of document." What is wrong? The icon of the file even shows adobe photo and I am positive that it is an adobe photoshop file. Can anyone help me?

You Can try PICASA from GOOGLE:
A free software download from Google.
Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organized.

Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures – you can email, print photos at home, make gift CDs, instantly share via Hello™, and even post pictures on your own blog.

Yes *.psd files are photoshop files. The icon is displayed for every such file.
First extract the original file again. You may have had an extraction error. If the extraction goes well the second time, and you still can't open the file then there are 2 possibilities: either you file is corrupted (by a virus or something), and there is no way to open it, or you could try installing a newer version of photoshop, or at least a trial version. Ver 9.0 is on the market for almost 2 years now (CS), so your version is pretty old, and i dont know if the *.psd files are compatible in the 2 versions..

I would suggest you try irfanview image viewer. If the file is misformatted or simply the wrong file format identifier it should tell you, http://www.irfanview.com/.
