Is it even right to do at all? Freinds are supposed to be there for support, but how much stress can one be put through before they realize the freind isn't going to change?

You are dead on bro.

Friends support friends...but when it is clear the behavior is destructive or will not change - then it is your obligation to take care of yourself.

Do not let someone drag you down with them, or waste energy stressing over someone else who refuses to get help or make smart decisions.

They will change when they are ready. Unfortuneately, that sometimes never happens.

When you say self-destructive -how are they self destructive? If they are involved in drugs and illegal activities and have been in a lot of legal trouble for a long time, then there is nothing wrong with discontinuing the relationship. You can not be responsible for how your friend lives their life and additionally, if their actions and how they live their life has detrimental impact on your life, then they are not a friend anyways. We all have those bad times in our lives, but if your friend is truly a friend then they will not let their life and the problems within it have negative affect on your life. If they do, especially repeatedly, then they aren't your friend anyways and you are better off without them.

Self-destructive ppl kinda lower your own morale after a while, take you into depression with them. Best thing you can do is slap them, shake em hard and make them listen to your opinion/advice. After that if they dont wanna listen, i guess you could just leave them be. If you're concerned that they might kill themselves, there's always helplines you can report them to.
