We were sold the values of humanism, equality and justice.... we were told democracy is the panacea from manipulation, we were told modernity will take us to the great heavenly peace all over the globe...

All we seem to have ended up is that the scale of bloodshed as well as corruption has increased. They just do it in a more sophesticated manner by even contolling our minds through media and wrek havoc in our name... Do you agree?

Are values of respect to human life and dignity seem to be a convinient farce?

Yes, you were taken for a long stroll down some garden path. The more they moralise, the more corrupt they seem to be. The ones that recruit the upstanding and religious citizens are the ones to watch. They are down right evil I have noticed. Hitlers methods have been carefully studied by the Bush publicity machine and most successfully employed. Is that too drastic? No, it is accurate. The idea is to find a group or nation to hate and rally everyone against them. Push the fear factor and convince the suckers that you are already working to destroy them. Sound familiar? Hitler had the Jews to use and Bush has the terrorists. He has done all he can do to make the situation worse and he never did catch Osama bin Laden, did he? No matter, he got what he wanted; your blind faith. Hell, even Jesus fell for it.......

For some reason the American culture seems to continually reduce complex/complicated world problems to mere sound bites.
Growing up and going to school during the Cold War, I was contiually told that the only problem in the world was the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain. It was assumed that if the Soviet Union and The Iron Curtain fell that the entire world would be at peace. Instead, when the Soviet Union fell some of the Eastern Bloc countries went to war against each other, and the Soviet nuclear weapons were now in dubious hands.
Right now, the Bush Administration has reduced the problems of the Middle East by proclaiming that democracy will cure all the problems. But the people in Palestine elected Hammas, a terrorist group to lead their country and in Lebanon, Hezbollah, another terrorist group have seats in their parliament.
It also seems that if the United States government right now doesn't agree with another country's elected government, that it will invade them ( think Afganistan - we disagreed witht the elected party, the Taliban, and invaded that country).
As far as I can see the current adminstration's foreign policies are simply causing the world to be on the brink of World War III,
As for the dignity and respect for human life, the Republican party, who currently have control of the Senate, House of Representative, and White House seem to only care about any health care only if you are a Terry Shivo and have been in a permanent vegatative state for over a decade. Also, there seems to be a huge schism between being against a Woman's choice concerning pregnancy ( they claim all life is sacred of from God) and yet being for the death penalty.

"we were told democracy is the panacea from manipulation"

I don't remember that promise. Democracy can be manipulated, but it is manipulated LESS that dictatorships and monarchies and tyrannies. This can be attributed to sunshine laws, open public meetings and record keeping and an independent press (not run by the state). We were promised a "republic if you can keep it".

This is a thought-out, lucid, and intelligent question.

My only response is that while we are sold the values of humanism, equality, and justice, we are simultaneously indoctrinated with a de-sensitization to violence in a society that holds little tolerance for those unwilling to compete "at any cost".

A federal grand jury indicted two U.S. citizens on Wednesday on charges of plotting "violent jihad" and undergoing paramilitary training in northwest Georgia to prepare themselves for terrorist acts.

I am in complete accord with you. Look what's happening around us, wars and more threats of war. Politicians are weak and getting the rest of us in a state of constant fear. they say one thing and do the other at the same time.
