It should be of high optical quality and sturdy mechanical construction. You cannot tell for sure just looking at it in the store. Below is a source that may help.

Check that you see no unwashed colors.
The larger the objective mirror or lens the more stars you can see.
Check for a stable construction. The telescope should not vibrate.
A follow mechanism is wanted.

so that's why we can't see god, we need a telescope for that.

I dunno I read that a REALLY good telescope costs around or above 500, but if you just wanna glance at the moon that's a different story.
