I'm a conservative and for the most part support Bush's policies. I also spent six years in the Army and went to Iraq for a year.

Fiscally Conservative ( A real one not a republican) I believe in an ultra small federal government and socially liberal...government bound by strong civil liberties.

So I'm pretty much sick of all the comments from the extremists from BOTH sides.

FACTS:
GOP supports large government...NOT CONSERVATIVE

DNC supports special interest groups that are not acting in the best interests of the country AND support social programs not in self sacrifice rather only at the EXPENSE of others AND support taking away civil rights....NOT LIBERAL

I love America, support the Presidency, though I do believe we could have found a more articulate one. GW does not meet my criteria for a conservative...he is a spend, spend, spender...He's actually closer to LBJ than any other president that I can think of. He shoots from the hip based on his gut instinct and ideology. He is a spend, spend, spender...biggest government guy I can think of. By the way...social programs have grown more under Bush and the Rep. Congress (who is really to blame, I am sorry to say) This is what upsets me. He has deserted conservative themes except in Iraq and anything related to religion, Abortion / stem cells.... I am a former Republican...who left the party during the George Bush I years...blaming him for Iran - Contra--rather than Reagan, whose clear vision was just perfect for what our country needed at the time. (and have not returned because the party is not centrist enough for me.) I am independent and hope to find a moderate conservative candidate in the future committed to National Security, Fiscal responsibility and a transparent gov't (except for CIA, who must do some things covertly).

We need to work together to live up to American Ideals of Liberty, and Justice, in a Ethical society, teaching those who can, to do for themselves...rather than to give handouts. Helping those who can't do for themselves to become self -sufficient.

We should guard against blaming groups of people for our countries ills. There are situations where philosophies held by groups are counter to our nations interests...and we must confront the dangerous ideology not the fact that someone looks different. It is the content of character that matters...

I believe in smaller government, less taxes, but do see a need for business to have some sense that big brother is watching them rather than the ordinary citizen.

Although....I'm really not sure what to make of Bush. Some of the things he's done really boggle the mind.

Edit - To Cranky Old Goat: That post was a sight for sore eyes. When did the term "conservatives" come to be defined by ignorant religious fanatics? Where are the rest of us?

I am an old, old conservative who previously and proudly survived some Republicans including Nelson Rockefeller.
Bush, Conservative, Bah Humbug; more money spent, wasted, and Bigger Government than any Democrat in Previous Memory.
And I was on The Gipper's local re-election committee and personally met the man.

Yep! Here we are! I'm more conservative now than before I had to read these liberal questions and answers. They've even got me listen to Rush Limbaugh and I couldn't stand him before! I don't think they realize just how many people they're pushing away.
