i think the violin makes the most beautiful sound in the world... plus the instrument itself is lighter so it's easier to carry around... but both are wonderful and i think it's commendable that you're going to learn!! good luck!!

Well, I'm slightly biased as I play the cello. The violin is always good for fireworks and high melodies. But the cello is beautiful, and more of an all-rounder, in my opinion. For fireworks, just listen to the conecrtos by Walton and Haydn. You can also get more sombre or spiritual moments - the cello suites by Bach, or the Passacaglia by Walton. It is great to play chamber music with as it often gets the most beautiful tunes - try the Dumky Trio by Dvorak. Another thing about cellos and chamber music is that they can support the whole thing, eg in a string quartet, which gives a real sense of warmth and grounding - it may sound boring, but it's not once you get into it - Haydn and Mozart String Quartets. It also gets some great tunes then as well - Shostakovich String Quartets Nos 2, 7 and 8. It mixes well, and is popular at events such as weddings and christenings. Other beautiful thigns you may want to listen to are 'Tom Bowling' - the solo in the Fantasia on British Sea Songs by Henry Wood, the Elgar Cello Concerto, the Brahms Sonatas, and so much more. It depends on what aspects you are looking for.
Violin is good for its vast repetoire. There are so many great solo pieces for it, ranging from very easy to extremely complicated. The violin is easy to learn, but far too difficult to master. For orchestral settings, it really depends on how good you are. Of course, first violins get the melody and the second violin part for a lot of music is a lot easier. The possiblities are endless.
Cello, on the other hand is excellent for its deep, mellow sound. The fingerings are completely different and as cello is a lot bigger, only choose it if you have somewhat longer fingers. I know that I can't even reach a fourth finger on a full size cello. Theres a lot of solo music for cello but really not quite as much as violin. For orchestra, cello supports a lot of the lower strings so it really does depend on what sound you like most.
Hope this helps a little.

I play the violin... The violin is fun because you usually play solos if you are playing in an orchestra. However, I wish I would have taken up playing the cello. I like the deep, rich sound rather than the high pitched sound of the violin.

I like violin. They're easier to carry around and they have a lighter sound. Cellos are just mellow though, but they both still sound smooth.
