please go to www.forums.petlovers.com/vb and under the fish section i BettaChris have writen many articles about fish, one being about betta splendens and sexing them.
Not all females are short finned and not all males are long fin. This is just what new betta people were taught. in the wild males are short finned. And with the help of slective breeding males and female have been breed to have long fins. i have alot of Halfmoon females that have more finnage than veil tail male bettas. Females have a white dot under them, called the egg tube.(if you go the website i explain it much better)
female bettas aren't alway at lfs, b/c they dont sell that well to people who have no intentions of breeding.
online is much better.

It is most likely that you have a male. A lot of pet stores don't even carry females, but I'm sure you can find them from reputable breeders. Females have much shorter fins and are usually less colorful. Males are the ones with the long flowing fins that flare up. Also, you can keep several females in one tank together, but the same is not true for males. If when you bought your betta he was isolated from other fish, that is a good indicator that he is a male.

Females are generally easy to identify. Crowntail females look almost like a male though. Female Bettas have very short fins compared to the males and rounded stockier bodies. Lots of pet shops carry them but they are probably in fish tanks with the other fish because several of them can be kept together. It is best to buy mature females because the coloration is much brighter. The immature ones have lines on them. A lot of times we order them for our shop and they are out of stock from the distributor. If you can't find them at the pet shop, ask them to order for you.

A male betta is the beautiful fish of the two, very colorful. The females are less attractive and colorless....
