I thought I was a bad speller until I visited this site.

It's not only the spelling, but also the bad punctuation and grammar that bothers me. These rules and regulations may seem trivial, but if people were to actually follow the rules of grammar, there would be fewer misunderstandings. The point of grammar and semantics is to insure accurate understanding. The "rules" of language are there simply to facilitate communication. Cries of, "Nobody gets me!!" should be met with responses like, "Then express yourself more clearly."

YES!

THERE is a big difference between homophones and THEIR meanings and spellings. THEY'RE NOT interchangeable.
Unless you have learning challenges, and if YOUR native language is English, then you should know better by the time YOU'RE old enough to use the Web.
TOO many people still don't seem TO get those TWO words right.
Did you HEAR your grammar teachers? They are HERE for a reason.
It makes me LOSE my mind when people are so LOOSE with their spelling.
Proper spelling will AFFECT your future. It will have a good EFFECT on it.
You BREATHE when you take a BREATH.
Likewise, you BATHE when you take a BATH.
You mash the BRAKE when you're on the road and you need to take a BREAK from driving.
You need to get your facts RIGHT before you WRITE them down.
It is so much WORSE when teens and adults can't spell. It's one of the WORST things ever.
OUR teachers ARE here for a reason.
The contraction of SHOULD/COULD/WOULD HAVE is SHOULD'VE/COULD'VE/WOULD'VE. You can't OF anything, but you can HAVE everything.
A LOT is two separate words.
If you don't care, then you COULDN'T CARE LESS.
It is DISGUSTING when people spell this word with a "C".
D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y. There is DEFINITELY no "A" in that word.

(:

I sometimes miss but I think my evaluations are reasonably accurate. I think I can tell the difference between an American kid who has graduated from a public high school and is too lazy or too dumb to use a spell checker, and someone in another country studying English as a second language and having to work very hard to be understood.

On the former, I just go to the next question. On the latter I use more effort to understand and I frequently try to answer.

To answer your question directly, it does annoy me but not to the extent you suggest.

YES! Many of the offenders of bad spelling (and grammar) are 'younger' people, who don't seem to grasp the fact that incorrect spelling is NOT acceptable and that when they 'grow up' and go out into the business world, correct spelling and grammar WILL matter. There is nothing more sad and pathetic that reading a one page, self-typed memo written by a University Grad.(with an MBA!) containing at least two spelling errors, and one grammatical error, and all his colleagues (and support staff) noticing.

Yes, sometimes it is completely unintelligible and it drives me batty.

If a person who is old enough to be on here can't write complete sentences or learn how to use spell checker then it is very frightening to think about what the future generation will be like.

My stepdaughter is 17 and she does not know correct grammar, punctuation or spelling. She just laughs and says 'Well, Word corrects it for me, so why do I need to learn it.' Unfortunately, she doesn't go to school from our house or my husband and I would make her actually work on homework and learn proper english.

One or 2 words is one thing, you know, typos. But the spelling on this sites elevates illiteracy to new heights.

I am not sure if it is stupidity or rudeness but a lot of this just annoys me. Sometimes I just leave because of the dumb questions and bad grammar and speliing.

It sure makes me wonder about our future when people don't care because they are in a hurry. Of course we are all human and make mistakes now and then, but really. There is spell check for those with the time to try out out.
I don't mind the abbreviations though.
