Okay, before you get started you need to read a lot of fantasy novels. This is not so you can steal other people's ideas, but so you can learn the "language" of fantasy. In the first place, you need a setting: like a magical kingdom -- now would be a good time to trot out the aforementioned unicorns or even dragons. You need a few good guys (usually prince, princess, warrior, good sorcerer). A bad guy is absolutely essential!!!
A quest is always a good idea, gives the characters something to DO. The good guys have to overcome awesome odds in order to accomplish whatever they have to accomplish. In the process they go through a kind of journey of self-discovery, everybody becomes brave, somebody sacrifices his life for someone else etc. The bad guy does whatever he can to stop them, because he probably wants to take over the magic kingdom himself. It might be a good idea to have one of the so-called good guys in league with the bad guy.
And you might want to add some romance, for example a beautiful princess that has to be rescued by a handsome, dashing etc prince. And a happy ending, of course.

is it magic-y fantasy? think of how the magic works. is it like, point a wand at something, or think about something, or buy the magic and use it, or how does it work? can everyone use magic?
Where is it set? In today's world or in the past, or in another planet (e.g Eragon). Do they know about our existence? What are we to them? Are we like mythical beings to those people? Can they travel to our world?
Are there different creatures there? like elves or dwarves or leprechauns or unicorns or whatever. Are the main characters human?
is it based around an object? Like a mythical gemstone or something? or is it more of a cruel-ruler sort of thing? How do your characters get drawn into the plot? Do they need to go on a quest? How do they solve the problem?
Is there a government in your story? Like a king or a council or something? Does the church rule? or is there no government at all?
Good luck with the story.

An average teenage girl looks into some object (maybe a ship in a bottle or maybe an old jewelry box) and finds a picture of herself in an exotic, fantastic land. She goes on a quest to find this place. The ending is where she places the picture into the aforementioned object.

Fantasy creatures are awesome, like unicorns. Also faeries get my sister's attention if you want to write a children's fantasy book. Adult fantasy books, hmm....I like reading about knights and there quests. Also there names are a big part, take lord of the rings for an example..that series has names like Ewoyn, frodo, ...I mean how many people do you know with names like that?
