The actual speed of light is 186,282.397 miles per second.

The actual length of a Julian year, the common basis for astronomical computation, is 365.25 days.

So:
365.25 x 24 x 60 x 60 = 31,557,600 seconds in a year

31,557,600 x 186,282.397 = 5,878,625,371,567.2 miles in a light year.

Yay! Mathematics! lets see, light is 186,000 miles per second, 60 seconds a minute, 60 mins. an hour, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, that totals 5,865,696,000,000 miles, or 5 trillion, 865 billion, 696 million miles. I hope that I was able to help, I have never really thought about a cool question like this. You helped me teach myself :).

186,000 * 60 * 60 *24 * 365 = 5,865,696,000,000

Light will travel 186,287 miles per second. Multiply this by how many seconds there are in a year. Daunting. Isn't it.

Why don't you answer this yourself? Multiply the speed of light (186,000 miles/second) times the number of seconds in a year (31536000). Believe me it's lots of miles!!

if light travels 186,000 miles per second. It is the distance light can travel in a year if unimpeded.

186,000 miles per second X 60 seconds per minute X 60 minutes per hour X 24 hours per day X 365 days Per year = 5,865,696,000,000 total miles in one year.
