Yes you can get pregnant using abstinence is the semen lands outside the opening it is possible for a virgin to get pregnant.
It has happened hundreds of times before.
And if you're religious some woman named Mary never even came that close yet still got pregnant.
Also many clinics are out there to get women pregnant without having sex...in-vitro.

Why teach abstinence? The only thing that has proven to do is cause more unwanted pregnancies because people are going to have sex just as much, but be ashamed or sneaky about it. I like the fact that people are being taught how to use BC's. Abstinence is only going to get people in trouble because the teens will be unwilling to tell their parents openly and honestly that they have started having sex. Communications need to be opened, not stifled by religious zealots who think abstinence and only having sex after marriage is the correct way to go about it.
Keep in mind that Abstinence is a new idea thought up by the Christians so that men would know for sure they are in fact the father of the children their wives bore. Oh, and don't forget that abstinence only applies to women, men can lie about it all they want, but get a woman who says she was a virgin and it can be proven otherwise.

Because teaching abstinance alone will not/isn't/wasn't/ working. I would rather my "children" knew everything about sex and birth control when they're teenagers and feel like they're 'adults' making 'adult' decisions, than to have them be clueless to the fact that condoms not only help prevent pregnancy but also STDs, and so many other things that kids these days seem to be so ignorant of (w/ abstinence still being the main choice). Maybe if along with sex ed. we taught them how sacred our bodies are it might help a little bit. It's just become so not a big deal, it's scary. I remember sex ed. all they did was tell us the body parts and their functions. Do teenagers really listen to their teachers? You can't just say abstinence is the only way and expect to say "oh, okay" and not have sex. You have to inform them, give them all the facts and guidance and remind them to respect themselves enough to wear those stupid jelly bracelets because they like them, not because they want other people to know how low they'll go just to be "cool". Respect is the key, for themselves and for others....but how to teach that in a classroom setting is beyond me. ^_^ I just hope teachers figure out a way soon before my kids get to be teenagers.

Abstaining from most every sexual act should eliminate any possibility of becoming pregnant. They do teach it in school, but people are going to do what they are going to do. What would be better is if they did more to prepare people for real life. Schools just don't teach basic survival skills any more which is a shame.
Instead they teach things that just aren't very practical, for example algebraic equations, which I'm not saying that they don't have their time and place but I've never used one in my life out side of school. They need to teach people how to cook, clean, sew, build things, handle finances, care for children, find and hold down a job, and to make better choices in relationships dealing with other people.

Abstinence is a great way to prevent pregnancy, yes.
However, I would rather have a sexually active teenage KNOW how to prevent pregnancy and STDs then not knowing anything.
Just like the abortion clinics--I would rather have a teenager have a safe abortion then go to an illegal clinic and die of infection.

Abstinence is the only 100% method--good point. Morality is taught last.
Anyone who thinks they will be a good parent needs to start when very young--with the decision to hold off being a parent until they are married and financially somewhat stable.
It's ludicrous that they say, "don't have sex until you are married....but if you do, here's a condom." Mixed signals, much??!!

Look I'm pro-life, however not everyone shares our views. Teens will have sex, you can't control them only thing you can do is educate them. Yes abstinence is the best prevention from STDS and pregnancy, but it's unrealistic to think everyone has your morals or will listen to you.

I'm Pro-Life, and so are my parents. They taught me what sex was, and what sex wasn't. They are good role models, and are always there. My mom stayed home, and my father worked. Their marriage by no means, was perfect, but they loved God, us, and each other. They made huge sacrifices for us, and we respected them. We were always too busy as a family for us kids to be thinking about sex, and the opposite sex. Because of what my parents instilled in me, I know that's why I waited to have sex until before I was married.
We all have very different lives, share different values, have different belief systems, that's why what you do, is what's in your heart. My point is, we as parents are the biggest example in our children's lives. If we aren't being good examples to our children, who will be the one teaching them how to live their lives?
