Why is taking care of each other and nature looked down upon?

First question: because your Average conservative, at least in the United States, is not only a Rich Man, but in many cases a second- or third-generation rich man, and so there is no real connection between these "people" and the humanity they routinely screw over. Honestly, 26 years of cultural and mass-media ownership, wherein *their* opinions about *their* society are the only ones that get heard or considered rational, that kind of intellectual monopoly will do that for them.

Think it isn't so? Check out that Laura Bush quote again, regarding the misery at the Super Dome, in New Orleans, post-Katrina. Look up how Pat Robertson *insists* that 60% of America has to die before it is on the "right" track again. Look up what Jerry Falwell had to say the *day of* 9-1-1 about the "real cause" of that disaster, that attack.

*THIS* is mainstream conservative thinking when the cameras aren't on. Seriously. Back in the 1980s, maybe there were some intellectual conuter-influences (The Cato Institute comes to mind here) but no longer. Ronald Reagan *has got* what he's wanted of America: We are now as poor, ignorant, desperate and violent as Brasil. Now your average Rich Man Conservative, your One Percenters, your CEO Class, they see fit to treat *at least* the bottom 80% of society as *utterly disposable*, treating the *poorest EIGHTY PERCENT* of humankind as if we were so much *roadkill* to sweep into the gutter....at best.

Really. New Orleans is the Beta Test. It is the final exam to check and see if America will tolerate *that* much abuse and neglect from our HMOs, CEOs, our militarized police (or is that police-state military? Is there a difference?)

Second question: Go back to those speeches by Ronald Reagan, in particular the ones that were aired in his *first year* of office before he had crafted that "Shining City on a Hill" metaphor.

That is the genesis of the hate right there. The hate and loathing of "political correctness" and of the "stagnation of the economy", the latter of which is the Rich Man's not-so-polite way of saying "We want MORE and we WILL NOT SHARE, dig it!"

Really. Nearly ALL of our society's current problems can be traced back, either to that "Greed is Good" mentailty *demanding* the rebirth of Social Darwinism and zero-sum job gaming, wherein the poorest 80% of society is treated as *trash, disposable, garbage and roadkill*, or to Jimmy Carter's *appeasing* the Arabs and Iranians, the Muslim Fanatic and Dictator Classes, and Reagan winning the office of the President *on that* and then continuing to *do much the same in the name of Cheap Gasoline*.

That answer your questions? Sorry to rant on so, but I get tired of seeing the problems, seeing the problems, and NOBODY wants to see them, and NOBODY wants to solve them...

I get tired of seeing *my* world, *my nation* and *My Planet too* degenerate into the Planet of the Apes, ok? I get tired of being in a society where solving problems is taboo, but *exploiting them to death* is all good.

Because it serves the hegemonic order of oppression. How is this so hard to comprehend? You oppress people into the lowest levels of scum, call them irresponsible, genetically deficient, have people say they are "illegals" non-citizens, should be deported, etc. When all that ever happens is that they make money off the poor, tax the poor, make them into servants undeserving of the great master's concern. It's passive-aggressive psychological war on the level of ideology that informs politicians and voters on how the policies 'should' be crafted. "I ain't gonna fund no education for no damn immigraint!" is the charge of the modern co-opted fool. The same one who is against welfare, taxing corporations, building communities, healthcare and social security.

It's not profitable to care for people. The news is owned by the major media corporations. They choose the broadacsters. Who choose the content according to what's advertiseable. What the station manager wants is nothing more than the success of his superiours--- the information is disseminated, people buy it passively. It becomes as real as a soda advertisement. Politicians require corporate donations still, of course they are influenced by that capital.

It's so corrupt in the states.
I didn't even know what the "2nd world" was until 2 years ago-- it never had been mentioned, that this "1st World" was set against not just the 3rd of poor nations, but the USSR. People have no idea how pervasive and powerful hegemony is. The history books will point to this cultural time as an era of cultural larceny.

I'm conservative and I don't feel that way at all. I'm not sure what you mean by the ordinary man, but I like all kinds of people - ordinary, extraordinary, even the nutty ones like myself. I try to realize that people are individuals. Life really is just too short to lump people into groups and assume they are all clones.
Live a little! There are so many interesting, fun people in this world if you step outside your self-imposed labeling system.
As for this planet, I take care of it! You should see my yard. It's a haven for hungry critters and I feed them all. I've taken an orphaned squirrel, an injured cedar waxwing and a baby bunny to a wildlife rehabilitator. I don't use any harmful cleaners or pesticides. I turn off the lights, recycle, never litter, conserve water, donate to charities, brake for ducks even if the SUV behind me gets mad. Which reminds me: I have NEVER in my life driven a gas hog! Who told you such nonsense about conservatives? You must not believe everything Katie Couric says.

neither one of these things is looked down upon by conservatives. I think they would rather help someone to be able to take care of themselves, so that they can have some self-respect ... instead of just taking handouts for the rest of their lives.

And as far as nature goes, there are many liberals who vote for environmental policies but are completely hypocritical & drive gas-guzzling SUV's themselves or fly around in their own personal jets. Go with the Green Party if you want consistency w/ policy & lifestyle.

Wrong on both parts of your questions. Just the opposite is true.

They don't. It's just liberals that say so and try to make conservatives look bad.

conservatives simply think you should get off your freeloading butt and go to work!
No one ever said life was going to be easy!
I'm sick and tired of welfare freeloaders!
