I used to keep one, now I just blog on my 360 page and write short stories/poems.
I really enjoy writing and this keeps me connected to my "inner-self".
If you are just starting, I would recommend these tips:
Date your page AND put the time down
Mention the weather for the day
Put your mood/how you are feeling on your page
List any unusual activities tied w/family/friends
Talk about funny things that have happened
Give your pet credit and write about it
Write about your goals, fantasies
Then, write about whatever you want to. It's YOUR page! Be creative and use this tool to record all your thoughts, emotions, secrets, etc.
Diaries (or journals) can be fun to look back on. Sometimes, they are a good reference tool, if you mention the things in the list above I gave you.
If your journal contains too much personal info, I would say lock it up so it will be for your eyes only!
Good luck and happy writing!

I've kept a journal since I was about 12 and I'm in my 40s now. As for getting started, there are several things you can do. When I first started, I used my journal to record thoughts, poems and ideas. When I got to my 20s there were times when I just couldn't think of anything to write, so I would find insightful questions or thoughts from other people and expand on them. That was a good way to delve deeper into myself. Now I'm back to thoughts, ideas, poems and dreams of what I want to achieve in this life.
Don't worry if you don't write every day, just check in on it at least once a week, read over what you wrote the last couple of entries and add your thoughts. Don't make it seem like work, or you'll never stick with it.

I keep a couple. I dont write in it everyday. Whenever I have to vent or tell a secret, it's always good. It's kind of relaxing. I also think it would be interesting to be able to go back years later and read that journal and laugh.

Don't ever let anyone find it. That happened to me when I was a teenager and I ended up getting death threats cuz I trashed all of the people who bullied me. Then I was babysitting at someone's house and I found my journal there in a coffee table. Turns out the thief had been babysitting there the previous week and had it with her for whatever reasons and forgot it. They thought it was hers and had intended to give it back whenever. Well, I stole it back and burned it, and the theif phoned the cops. Would you believe I was almost charged? In one of the few moments my mom ever came through for me, she marched down to the station and played them the answering machine tape with the threats. Sorry, it was all a very bitter experience I wouldn't wish on anyone. HIDE THAT JOURNAL!

I've kept 1 for a little over 4 years now. I love it. I write in there almost everyday about things that I could never tell (almost) anyone in the whole wide world. My tips are 2 stick w/ it. Write about things that are important 2 you. You can look back @ it and see what you went through. You can analyze your life and it can even be a place 2 brainstorm and solve some of your toughest problems.

Write in it at night before you got to bed. It's a way to vent also if you have had a bad day or things on your mind. Then weekly I got back to see what I wrote about the week before. I have been writing in my journals for years. Started one when I was 14 and have been since. I miss a day or so now because I get busy. I just catch up and write about the days I missed. It's good for you and funny to read years down the road.

I've got one! An online one, one that me and my friends pass around, and then one to myself!
If you find it hard to make time to write in it, schedule to write in it. Pick like 10 or 15 minutes of your day (preferably at the end after everything's happened) when you're most relaxed and not busy. If you don't have any important things to write (like maybe something REALLY ticked you off) then just write about random things that pop into your head. That's what I do, and it's really fun! :) Good luck, and have fun!
Oh, and make sure to include doodles (for like people you met that day, or a cute dog that you saw)

i have kept a journal since i was a 16. as for tips.... buy hard cover lined 6 by 8 books, number them, and put the start and finish date, do not write anything in them that you would not want anyone to read in days ,months, or years to come... i have written about everything... my children, poems, fears, loves, loses, likes, dislikes, many times i would just sit and write, sometimes about a book i was reading, a movie i just saw, something that just happen, a dream i had, anything and everything. to date i have over 146 books....
