I respect what cheerleaders do, although the original purpose of "leading cheers" has become obsolete in most places, but I'm not sure that I would consider cheerleading a sport. There doesn't seem to be much of a competitive aspect that could be graded: gymnastics, for example, might be considered a sport, but put ten gymnasts on the mat at once and it becomes rather hard to judge.

In any case, I wouldn't put much weight on whether cheerleading is or is not a sport. Even if we say that it is not, that would not detract from it in any way. There are many worthwhile activities that wouldn't really be called sports, from chess to noncompetitive dancing. What's really important is that cheerleaders are often very good at what they do, and seem to often feel that it is a rewarding pursuit.

Cheerleading is more of an activity, rather than a sport. Competition cheer could be considered a sport but when they're just on the sidlines, that isn't much of a sport.

Cheerleading is an activity. As in your ignorance of balance and lifting for other sports try thinking about figureskating (skate and ice), Judo, pair dancing, these are real sports. They are not sports just for preppy girls to go shake thier bodies and scream while thinking it is incredibly difficult to do. It is not hard to lift someone and for cheerleading they have 2 or more people lift an anorexic girl, i personally am not a cheerleader and easily lift 300lbs men by myself.

Cheerleading has gotten pretty sophisticated over the years, with competitions, etc. So, yes, I'd say it's a sport, depending how it's done.

I think it's a sport, though I'm not a cheerleader.

I guess it's a sport (sorta), but so is ice dancing and that gets no respect either.
