This is my assignment from my Educational Psychology class. Thank you for answering. I hope you can mention your name so I can show proof to my professor that I'm not making up the comments.

The National Education Association (the giant teachers' union) during its July, 1999 national convention, passed a resolution on "Racism, Sexism, and Sexual Orientation," stating its organization "believes in the equality of all individuals. Discrimination and stereotyping based on such factors as race, gender, immigration status, physical disabilities, ethnicity, occupation, and sexual orientation must be eliminated."

So, the answer is Yes if that teacher has union representation.

Gayness...lesbian-ness...does not dictate which careers you can or cannot do. Society may have taboos about it, and certain jobs may have restrictions, (religious!), but one must make the distinction between sexual orientation and "criminality"... people sometimes feel a homosexual would "do" something to a child. This is not any more true than a heterosexual "doing" something to the same child. So, those that have the prejudice, either think, "religiously", the others may think "criminally".
My answer: Yes!

Yes they can. I teach at a rural middle school in South Carolina. I have several gay teachers who teach in my district. They are not as open about their sexuality while they are at work. They are awesome teachers and the students seem to really enjoy them. One of my gay friends moved to Houston, Texas a few years ago and he feels so much more comfortable teaching there than he did here in SC. They are much more open there and even have clubs for their gay students. I guess your question should be "Are homosexual teachers accepted?" because homosexual teachers are everywhere. :-)

Outside of the Catholic Church, why not? It's like asking if a Black, Hispanic, Jew, Asian, Man, Women, etc. could be a teacher.

Teachers are there to help their students learn, and their gender or sexual orientation aren't things that affect their ability to teach.

So long as it doesn't intefere with their ability to teach the subject at hand, it's perfectly OK.

Of course! Sexual orientation does not determine which job you can or cannot do. As long as you are a skilled teacher and have the patience and determination to carry out your job successfully then i dont see what'll stand in you way of becoming a great educator.

Good luck!

Absolutely, yes, a homo can be a teacher. True story: My 1st grade son's teacher last years was gay. He has AIDS and he missed 75% of the school year because he was in and out of class due to his illness. All the children suffered as a result.

Sure, homos can be teachers. No problem.

If someone was to deny any one a job one a base of sex, religion, or sexual orientation then that company, which in the case of a public school would be the government, could be sued for unequal employment.

I don't see how your sexual preferenes could affect what you chose to do in life. The only thing that might concern me though, is trying no to be too effeminate in front of young children, they subconsciously pick up a lot of what they see, and that could be a problem with certain closed minded parents.

I'm gay and a teacher so the answer is yes. HOWEVER I teach in a public school, if you teach in Catholic school and they find out you are gay you can be fired (their schools, their rules).

Almost all teachers who have sex with their students are straight (a la Mary Kay Letourneau)
