Darwin's theory of evolution is the number one misinterpreted theory in science today. Everyone has an opinion but few understand the true theory. Struggles and surviving because of struggling is so off base. All living things are in competition with each other for what is available in the environment. If organisms have certain characteristics that will help them survive and allows them to reproduce successfully they are considered evaluational successes. If the environment changes and becomes less hospitable toward these organisms they may find it difficult to reproduce successfully since they do not have any structures or habits to help them adapt to these changes. So they don't reproduce well they become less in number and if things don't change they become extinct. They may have some traits that will help them survive and adapt to this new environment. Those with these traits will reproduce successfully and probably develop into a new species of that organism. Nature is the guiding hand in all of this. We follow the environment. Since we are adding thing to it that are harmful to all forms of life (pollution), we may see some real evolutionary stress hitting us real soon.

Not always
there are some situations where the strugglers die off quick and the patient ones who pause and think survive

the two that first come to mind
1) the person who falls in quick sand.
the struggler gets pulled under quickly
the survivor waits, floats trys to find ways to move toward shore.
2) the person who drives a car into a lake, canal or whatever
the struggler uses up oxigen passes out
the survivor regulates his breathing while waiting a few minutes for the water pressure inside /outside to equalize then opens car door or opens/breaks window.

that only applies to wild animals today. before the time of human comfort only the strong lived, only those who struggled and braved the world survived in this world, the rest became victims to the strong. now we help everyone and the weak are help along to survive. we have better health care and more compassionate people.

I think some people take "fittest" to mean "healthiest", as we use it today. Actually, "fittest" means "successfully adapted to survive". It doesn't have much to do with struggling.

survival of the fittests refers to how well adapted an animal is to it's surrounding and environment, and how adaptable they are to it if it suddenly changes.
