I've taught for over twenty years, and for me, motivation means simply "to move." Learning takes place only when the mind is ready to move from its present state... to encompass something new, the mind must change. Motivation itself can be caused by many factors, both internal and external. An internal factor might simply be a desire to learn to play a musical instrument; it's the desire that moves you to take the necessary steps. An external factor is usually some kind of reward; you might be motivated at work by a paycheck, the praise of your employer, etc.
