Example: true story...When I was a teenager I used to babysit for a sister of mine. After I put my nephew and niece to bed, and eventualy, I went to bed, the house would be quiet and as I was trying to fall asleep, I would hear footsteps in the attic. I would check my nephew and niece to make sure they were ok, and that the windows and doors were locked, as well as the basement, but I never checked the attic. Then I would fall asleep listening to the footsteps. This happened almost every time I baby sat . I never told anyone about it. When I got older I figured out what caused the footsteps.

Okay, folks, thank you all very much for your amazing stories, some of which actually gave me goosebumps. I am going to leave this question open for the full allotted time because the stories are so great. I didn't mean to leave U all in suspense so long about my own story, but I got gaught up in reading YOUR stories. Well, there is nothing like logic to ruin a good scary story, but here goes: My sister's house was located out in the country. During the heat of the day, the heat in the attic made the joists and other wooden framework swell. Then at night, it would get very cool and the wood would shrink to it's normal size. The wood pulling away from the nails which held it all together would create a popping sound (or creaking) which, when happening in a proper sequence would sound like footsteps going from one end of the attic to the other. Some people refer to this as the house "settling." Add this to my vivid imagination and it didn't take much to scare the bejeezuz out of me

First of all-what caused the footsteps???
When I was about 8, I was in Canada. I was left w/my cousins (ages 10 & 11) while my mon took our grandmother to the doctor. Someone rang the bell. We went to the door and found a man standing there w/a knife by his side. Luckily he didn't see us through the frosted glass doors. We panicked, ran to the basement, and called my cousin's uncle to pick us up. We never figured out who it was.
I always thought that I imagined the whole incident, but I brought it up to my cousin once a few years ago and she said told me it was real.

Okay, this one time I was talking with my friend at college, and he was really freaked out...really didn't get any sleep, you could tell! So I asked him what happened last night...he said that he was about to fall asleep (his room is the only one in the basement of the house, he lived with his parents and 3 younger siblings all sleeping) when under his shut door he saw a shadow go by, the lights were all off, so he didn't understand how there could be a shadow in the dark! He gets up, turns the lights on, opens his door nuthing. He lays back down, and he saw the shadow again...and heard two slight, light knocks, one right after the other. He gets up, quickly opens the door, and he saw this shadow move really fast around the corner. He slowly walks, and peeks around the corner, thinking it was just one of his brothers, he looks and he saw this demon type thing sitting on the couch, holding the remote and looking straight at the TV as it was on...muted. This demon guy looked at my friend, straight in the eyes then ran, so fast he didn't see him go, but heard him run up the steps, sounding like thunder. He just stood there, was too shocked to move, then he heard these steps, slowly coming down the stairs, he was terrified, he just backed-up behind the corner, and stood there, debating wether or not he should pray. Then he heard his younger brother call his name, really softly, he looks, and his brother's sticking his head around the corner. He asked if he fell or something, cause he heard some loud banging....my friend turns around, goes into his room and drew a picture of what he saw sitting on the couch. He brought the picture with him, and showed me...seriously I know he is a good at drawing, but there is no way he could draw something like that without seeing it, and the look in his eyes when he told me...it was really creepy! And he isn't the type to play like that, he's not the one of my friends with all the pranks...so you decide if you believe him.

frightening as in a spooky event or just a scary one?
scary experience: i was at my uncle's house and somebody drowned in the pool and was unconscious. good thing was almost everybody in the family are in the medical field and they were able to revive the girl even before the paramedics came.

spooky: when i was young, i would often hear something like a big heavy box falling only to find none.

one time my sister and i came home from a party. my sister always play this prank on me when she would run to my room and scare me as soon as i get there. so after the party, she was ahead of me and i saw her run into the room. while walking, i was saying out loud "oh, cut it out!" then when i reached the room, it was empty and that moment she came out of the restroom asking "what's going on?" -- i actually saw somebody run towards my room. that time, my sister was wearing a black top and a black pants -- that's what i saw! and it was even giggling as it was entering my room.

another story is we used to live with my uncle. one night my sister got up to use the restroom and noticed that there is a silhouette or a shadow in the dining room, reading a newspaper -- because she can hear the page turn (and there were no open windows, so there was no wind). she didn't mind, since my uncle sometimes gets up to read, but then she realized, "who would read the newspaper at this time, in the dark?"

and then there are cases when i would be in the car with my mom and see people walking around, then disappear in a blink of an eye.

My sister and a friend were house sitting in a very nice, but very old house. They were both teenagers at the time. They thought it was too spooky to sleep upstairs, so they decided to sleep downstairs in sleeping bags. My sister's friend had already fallen asleep. It was nearly midnight. My sister was lying awake and began to hear what sounded like a dresser being pushed across the wood floors upstairs. She said she could hear the sound moving all the way across the room above them. She looked to her friend to see if the sound had woken her, but it hadn't. So she continued to lay there for several minutes terrified, but too embarrassed to wake her friend and admit it. Then, just at midnight (I know, I found this all a little dramatic myself, but this is the story) they heard a woman's scream, which seemed to come from inside the house. At that point, they both sat straight up--it had been loud enough to wake my sister's friend from a deep sleep. They gathered their blankets quickly and ran across the street to the friend's parent's house, and had her father come check the entire house. Of course, he found nothing. They continued to take care of the house during the day, but neither of them would sleep in it again.

My hands were caught in a pugmill (a machine that makes clay...a big open steel machine with revolving blades and blades buillt into the sides), I screamed and passed out...when I woke up I was on the floor with clay all over me and I couldn't feel my hands and I didn't even know if they were still there...it was the single worst/scariest event in my life...after a dozen or more surgeries I am mostly back to normal, but it's def. a situation I wouldn't wish upon anyone!!!

When I moved into my home we had just built I kept hearing footsteps in the hall and doors opening and closing and cabinets being left opened.I know it wasn't my two girls one was only 1 month old and the other 4.It happened just about every night at the same time. One night I was down in my den and heard the loud steps of someone coming down the hall and stairs.I looked up into the kitchen and waited to see who it was. There wasn't anyone coming and so I jumped up from the couch and quickly went to the bottom of the kitchen stairs walked up them and stopped.I was afraid to enter the living room.I did so slowly and looked up to the top of the stairs into the hallway and I seen it.I couldn't scream or move because at the top of the stairs stood a young man,he was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans. His hair was dark brown and he was quite tall. The crazy thing was is that I could see right through him.He just stood there looking at me with a smile on his face.He turned and walked into my baby's room.I believe it took me 2 seconds to get up those stairs and into my daughters room. You guessed it he wasn't in there but I swear I could here a soft sigh of a man and it was really cold in her room.I did see him again from time to time but I was never afraid of him again.

Since you love the stories I have another for you and I could care less about the points I just love telling my true life stories.

I was a freshman in high school and I was called the teen witch of Mt.Juliet High.I loved telling people their future and did allot of readings for my friends. It was all in fun until one night at my best friend Neva's home.It was Neva,Patty,my sisters Vicky,Alice and Peggy staying there for the night. They talked me into giving a seance and that was my first mistake. We all sat down in a circle in her living room with the lights off.We only had a candle lit and it was on the table. It started off as a joke on my sisters but it ended bad.As I sat there mumbling stupid things we all felt a heavy precence in the room.I looked around to see if I could tell if anyone had moved but no one had.I asked if there was someone trying to speak to us and that is when we heard the most scariest voice coming from my little sister. We shined the candle on her face and let me tell you what I saw wasn't the face of my little sister.it was a very old woman's face.the others seen this too and screamed. If you can imagine 5 teenage girls trying to get up at the same time in the dark then you know we were falling all over each other.Neva got to the door first and jumped out and the rest of us followed.yes we left her in there and I am not saying I was a good sister because it took me only a second or two to go back inside.I found Peggy sitting in the same spot with a smile on her face.I almost died of a heart attack and all she could do was smile. My second mistake was trusting my friends to play along with me.You see the joke was on me.She had a stupid mask in her hands and told me they made her do it.I could have strangled all of them but you know what I never I mean never ever did that sort of stuff again.I just kept thinking what if it had been for real.
