Isn’t it sad that we even need to ask that question? It is frightening that we need “permission” from government to have a religion. The 1st Amendment to the Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,” yet our government actually has taken it upon themselves to define what constitutes a religion, and require people to get authorization from them to establish one. What part of “NO LAW” do they not understand?

I think the mistaken believe that the 1st Amendment provides for “separation of church and state” has led to our acceptance of Congress’ interference in our freedom of religion. The 1st Amendment was not designed to separate church from state, but to separate state from church! It was not designed to protect atheists from exposure to the beliefs of others, but to protect the right of people to have and express their beliefs. In fact, it further bans “prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Anyone who doesn’t like someone else’s beliefs is free to disregard them.

I encourage you to start a religion, to tell others about it, and to band together with people who have similar beliefs, and don’t bother to ask for permission. When the government comes knocking on your door to tax and regulate you, hand them a copy of the Constitution, with the 1st Amendment highlighted and underlined. Point out to them that they are prohibited from “abridging (your) freedom of speech” and “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.”

Yes. New religions pop up from time to time. Look at all the religious cults out there... not to mention some old cults like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Each was based on laws.. the testament, the new testament and the Koran.
