It depends on what drug, the cost and his or her ability to pay. Most drug addicts can afford their habit without resorting to extreme actions to support their habit.
The most common forms of addiction are alcoholism and prescription drug use... both of which do not require as much effort to obtain as a heroin or crack.
Some drugs like meth can be manufactured in large quantities and while causing great harm to the individual physically and mentally, it may be very easy to obtain.
Other drugs like cocaine are expensive and some addicts may have to resort to criminal activity to support their habit.
For yet unknown reasons addicts have a physical reaction to drugs that is different from other people. Drug use causes a craving in addicts that seem to override all other rational thinking.
What an addict does to support his/her habit is proportional to the level of addiction they have reached, their desperation to obtain drugs, and the means available to them.

a drug adict should either get help or die. They are slowly commiting suicide anyway and can use that money to go to charity. The other option is to get help.
