I live in California and fly to Japan often. I have never paid over $900 for a flight to Japan. If you watch the airlines listed below, you can find great fares, but you have to pay attention and check them often (once a week or so). They often have sales and sometimes only for like 4 o 7 days, so you have to pay attention, but you can get some amazing fares by doing so. Links below are in order of best possible deals. Just a real life experience-flying from Chicago O' Hare to Osaka Kansai on United cost me $1300 roughly, for the lowest fare. A few big major airports like I think it was Dallas or Fort Worth and San Fransico also make trips to Japan regularly. Those would probably be a bit less since they are closer to the Pacific. I might be wrong, but I wouldn't expect to spend less than $1000.

That would depend where you are flying from.
Go the the web site of the airline you wish to use and check out their fares.
Sometimes that is where you will find the cheapest fares.
