Yes, I can go up on an escalate, but not down, gives me a panic attack and I can't breath. I have no idea why.
Also have a thing about automated walkways in large airports. I can go on them as long as i can walk forward on them at the same time. Once I got to walking so fast, the sidewalk came to an end and I fell on my knees, one lady almost fell over me!
So, you're not alone, bet there are more like us!

I got stuck in an elevator once too, and I didn't like that pent up feeling. I don't like glass elevators that go up the side of huge buildings either. Escalators don't bother me unless I'm on with a small child or old person. I'm afraid they will fall off.

I hate getting on to a down escalator, always kind of tense until I get on it. It also depends on the length of the escalator. I hate elevators, make my head feel like it's going to explode.

Its normal. Escalators are a strange mechanical thing, it seems like it would be easy to get tripped up on them. Actually they are fairly safe. Elevators are claustrophobic and being jammed in them with odd strangers could be a bit unnerving. There are so many phobias out there this one has sound reasoning behind it. I'm especially leery of escalators, my skinny little hands, neck and feet could so easily get sucked up in the thing.

My aunt has a fear of escalators...it's not as uncommon as you would think. She fears getting caught in the steps when it meets the ground. I have also seen a special on Dateline about injuries due to escalators...there are quite a few.
