Until relatively recently it was considered one of the number one tourist destinations in the world.

However, please note its proximity to Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East. It could be dangerous at this time.

Otherwise, it has a lot to see:

Istanbul - the Bosporus, the Golden Horn, the Blue Mosque, the Mosque of Bayezid II, the Hagia Sophia, or Basilica of St. Sophia, the Topkapi Palace, many bazaars including the covered one, the suspension bridge over the Bosporus peninsula, streets with weird names translated into English e.g. the Elephant's Path and the Street of the Chicken that Could Not Fly

Ruins of ancient city of Troy

Ruins of Ephesus, of interest to Christians because of visits by apostle St. Paul and commonly held belief that it was last home of the Virgin Mary. It also has an interesting Greek amphitheatre.

the Kusadasi (islands) considered to have an enormous number of species of birds

Small towns in the region

Anatolia region - many museums including one with Hittite art
e.g. Ataturk Museum and Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

Cappadoccia region

City of Izmir

Town of Bodrum

Turkey has a rich mixture of cultures and major historical associations. Don't forget the Turkish coffee, which a lot of people love! I have been hoping to go there and combine it with a trip to Greece. You can probably tell. However, I do not have the money this year! Furthermore, the situation in the Middle East looks too scary.

If you are seriously considering going there this year, you might benefit from consulting a travel agent about safety issues.

Politically, Turkey and Greece seem to have stayed out of major hot water up to now. The political status of Turkey in relation to other Middle East countries seems interesting, as it is a predominantly Muslim country that has invaded other Muslim countries in the past.

It's a very beautiful place for a holiday. They have nice sea food restaurants near what looks like a Corniche. Many beautiful places to visit there. Lots of great picnic spots in uphill area. Disadvantages though are the traffic, you have to walk carefully- drivers couldn't care less. Always carry sufficient water with you and snacks when touring as you can stop in some of the gardens of important historical sights to rest when you feel tired.
