Hi...I just learned that there is a Private Investigator sitting in a car in the neighbours drive-way directly in front of my house - we live in Toronto, Ontario. He was there yesterday and has been there the past few hours this morning. This is making us extremely uncomfortable...are there any laws behind P.I.'s? If I approach him to ask if he's investigating anyone in my household, will he by law have to tell me the truth? Please fill me in if you know the answers.
Thanks!

P.S. *We know he's a P.I. because the neighbour asked who he was and what he was doing - didn't say who he's spying on.
*NO, we didn't do anything wrong (at least not that we're aware of)
*Why be uncomfortable? because he's SPYING!!! He's got cameras and other devices - Being that he's facing our house doesn't allow us a feeling of much privacy!!

Thanks again for all your help.

If he's not on your property, but in your neighbor's driveway and the neighbor allows it, he's not doing anything illegal. Maybe check with your neighbor to see why he's there. (And how do you know he's a private investigator?)

Well as long as he is not interrupting your property and such then there is no law against it. If it becomes a harrassment or physical force and etc. P.I do know where their limits are.. He is parked in a public place, there is nothing you can really do unless if it was a no parking zone area or such then you can have that be taken care of but other than that you can't do anything about it.

There might be a chance that he's investigating someone else on your block and doesn't want them to see him. Have you done anything that would cause a P.I. to want to scope you out? If not, I would have to assume he's tracking someone else. Why don't you call the police and tell them your concerns.

you should put up a sign in your front yard that reads "warning a private investigator is in a black car in the driveway across the street" or go sit in your car with a notepad and binoculars and spy on them. or you are paranid due to smoking to much crack

You should do a whole bunch of crazy stuff, that has nothing to do with anything. Go outside and start building a mini house on your roof. Throw eggs inside your mailbox. Ect. Ect.

In my neighborhood (in the US -- Maryland) I can call the police and report that someone's just sitting in a car and have the police figure it out. A PI can be ordered off your property, so if you live in a homeowner's organization, you can get him out that way.

He doesn't have to be truthful to you but to a police office, he does.

Have you done anything that would make anyone want to know what you're doing? It would make more sense that he is watching someone else, because he is very noticeable to you.
It couldn't hurt to ask him, but take anything he says with a grain of salt. {:-)

If you have not broken any laws why are you worried? And how do you know who the hell he is? If you are concerned for your safety, call the police. And no, he does not have to tell you anything.

Call the cops and tell them (in a mad voice) "There is a guy across the street and i think he's dealing crack out of his car."

Why would he make you uncomfortable? I guess it's time for you to leave town fast. It wouldn't bother me if there were a truckload in MY driveway!
