if you live in a state like CA, the short answer is that you can't, it's illegal.
if you live in a state other than CA, you can go to the hardware store and buy a lock rekey set, it comes with pins and all the uncommon tools specific to the brand of lock you have that you need for disassembling the lock and reassembling it. (before it was made illegal in CA I had fun doing this now only a licenced locksmith may rekey your locks.) the kit will come with detailed directions, follow them to the letter and you will have a lock that fits your old key. be warned, if you want to rekey it because you lost the old key it wont work, you must have the old key to proceed.

you have to get the actual lock apart and there are little flat metal pieces that have notches in them that you can remove. it's like a puzzle, since you need to "rearrange" the metal pieces that fit the notches in the key. A bit of a trial and error project.
