I could describe how many of a car's mechanical systems function, but to do a really good job requires visual aids.
I would recommend going to howstuffworks.com and looking up "4 stroke engine", "differential gearing", "manual transmission", and "automatic transmission" This should give you a detailed understanding of these systems. After that, you can look up "anti-lock brakes", "electronic fuel injection", "diesel engines", and even "turbochargers".
Good luck with your quest for knowledge.

I could write a lot more than I have time too. Go buy yourself an auto repair manual and start reading. You will learn more from it than you will on here.

You could get hundreds of pages back on this. Narrow it down a bit.
