Here is a lovely free program that i have used in the past.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7309,tfg,tfg,00.asp Motherboard monitor, will tell you temperature and fan speeds and the like.
Also another way, is if your able to, go into your bios, and go into Pc Health status. and that should tell you.
To help reduce temperature, take an air compressor or just canned air and blow out any fans or heat holes on your laptop, dusk with do a lot to heat up your system. Also if your able to see where there is a fan on your laptop, make sure it spins up.
Anyways blow it out anywhere theres a fan or holes that look like let out heat, getting rid of dust will help A TON.. I dropped my system 10degrees recently by blowing out the cpu fan and heatsink.
Good luck

Doctors have found that holding a 'laptop' in the lap can result in sterility, or at the least, reduced sperm count... then, you grow titties, lose facial hair...
Ugly scene, man... put the 'lap top' on a table, TV Tray holder (Wood! $7.88 at Walmart!), chair, or other solid surface, NEVER on cloth surfaces, that could restrict air flow, or become enflamed!
And, wear Boxers, NOT 'briefs' or your gf's panties! The jewels need AIR just like the 'laptop'!

a small free program is avial. to check your motherboard functionality. called 'motherboard monitor' avail from snapfiles. if your fan is working it will make lots of noise; could be a hardware prob. laptop coolers avail. for those pesky hi speed jobs that do ok, make sure your processor is not running a bunch of un-needed processes; freefile 'what's running?' can give you an overview of just that.

You didn't say what model you have. There're many utilities you can use, but they only work on certain models.
Take your pick.
