One for the road

Meaning

A final drink taken just before leaving on a journey.

Origin

Thought to originate from the practice of offering condemned felons a final drink at pubs on the way to the Tyburn Tree, which was the place of public execution in London.

30 years ago, drinking and driving was still not penalized. It was normal, everyone did it. And drunks who killed people were lte off with almost nothing becuase all the lawyers and judges involved thought "there but for the grace of god go I" - in other words, they drank and drove too.

Things only changed after a decade of "Mothers Against Drunk Driving" fought and fought and fought for changes. The first "Mothers" were women who's children had been killed by drunks who received a slap on the wrist (like a fine so something) for having taken a life.

The phrase is old - from that time.
