Get a Dell or Toshiba. You might want to try out the new Dell XPS.

Get at least 1 gig of memory.
At least 200 gigs of hard drive space.
Get the latest Nvidia or ATI 256MB or better graphics card.
Make sure the CD/DVD drive is also a burner, not just a reader.
Make sure you get either Vista or XP Pro.

I prefer a laptop even though it might be more expensive because it is portable. However, it is true you will spend less on a desktop.

IF u are looking at Desktop,

1. Decide the budget.
2. If u are looking for a cheaper one then look for an AMD athlon model ( Cheaper than Intel).
3. Look at the Speed that is supported by the processor ( for Eg. 2.4 GHz, Dont compare the speed of Intel and AMD there is a small difference between them)
3. U need to buy DDR ram as SDRAMs are no more availabelor u may be in trouble if SDRAM gets damaged. So atleast 256 MB RAM is required.
4. THhe FSB speed offered by the Processor and motherboard has to be taken in to account. Look for greater speed.
5. The Motherboard has to be bought that are recommended by the processor vendors.
6. Once u select motherboard, RAM , processor look for Vido card. If u are planning to play Games then u need video card and look for one.
7. Hard disks are prettu cheap and so buy one 80 Gb ( Depends o ur need)
8. Proper cabinet has to be bought and proper cooler should be mounted ( FAN ) for the processor as some processor get too hot.
9. Look for Onboard ethernet port ( Most of the new mother boards has one )

Hope this helps u out in buying a computer.

hi, now a day's technology is getting faster and faster by the second therefore it really is hard to chose what to buy. well for the best or like the average i would say get a intel duo core prossesor with ht tech with about at least 2.0 ghz speed and at the least 512 memory of ram, the hard drive you should get should be big for you will be using it for games, homework, music and all that stuff so you should get at least 100 GB or higher. Then the cards shouldnt really be a problem. They just come with the computer so =]

Laptop wise, I believe Dell and HP are the current companies to get your bang for your buck. Desktop wise, I prefer Dell and IBM. STAY AWAY FROM E-MACHINES!!! They use crappy parts! Dell has a great website to buy PCs. You can get a good average rig for 500 and up. Average specs for a PC right now are a 2.4 GHz Processor, 80 GB Harddrive, 1 GB RAM, DVD Rom/CD Burner, floppy drive, 128 MB Video card. Hope that helped!

Hi, i recomend that you get a PC made for you, because its unexpensive than the branded. Also i must add that u need a very good PCI Card to run games or to increase ur Pcs performance. Look for Pentium-D processors and besides that PCI Express cards are must have. Get a 1GB DDR2 RAM with a sony combo drive.
prices can range from 1000$ to 500$ and to 2000$ remember dont get a branded computer its very expensive..

I have had good experience with Dell. When buying a computer, it is all about choosing the right processor. If you play graphics-intensive games, then you need a Pentium 4 processor computer($450). If you play simpler games, surf the net, word, then Celeron processor will be fine ($300). Make sure you have at least 512MB of RAM.

I would recommend a desktop ove a laptop. One of the main reasons it is more easy to upgrade. but a lot of it depends on your price range... and what you want to do with it long term. I custom build gamming computers and fix computer for people I would not mind at all helping you out. just emial me at slaughter20@yahoo.com and tell me price range and what not and I will give you some pointers.

Get a Sony Vaio or a Mac. They are both good computers and will stay good for a while to come. Don't waste your money on something cheap, you'll end up paying more for it in the end.

Check the top desktop reviews from the editors on cnet.com. This could be very helpful in making the right decision.
