I adore my laptop ... and these days they're small and light, so why cramp yourself up typing on a palmtop??

I would say Notebooks (Laptop was the name of bigger machines and I would not use this word anymore) are useful to situations where you have to prepare on the going (out of your home or office) letters, spredsheets and other tasks that are more in the Personal Computer area. They are heavy compare to Palms machines. Palms machines are lighter, but are more used to collect data, to read memos and email. They have less capabilities but are lighter.
I use them depending of the job to be donne. They are ok to remember you of dates, they have an agenda like sw and they have alarms like an alarm clock. For salespeople to collect data for order entry, to register small quantity of data are ok, but if you have more detailed things to do then PC´s are better. Tell me what job you hold and I would be more specific.
