The photos must be 2" square when submitted, though they will appear smaller in your finished passport. You can make your own passport photos by following the photo guidelines at http://www.travel.state.gov -- there are rules about the background color and texture, the size of the face, etc.

It's a good idea to be familiar with the rules even if you have professional photos made; our first set of purchased photos were rejected for being too dark, which forced us to have them redone and make a second trip to apply for passports.

The photos are required to be 2" X 2" & must be identical.

Mine is 1 3/8" x 1 3/4".
