Quarks are the basic components of hadrons. Hadrons are particles that experience the strong nuclear force. So for example, protons and neutrons (in the nucleus) are hadrons and are made out of quarks.

There are six different types of quarks called, up, down, strange, charm, bottom, top. Only the up and down occur in regular matter (althought there is a small amplitude for the strange in both protons and neutrons, they are usually seen as being only up and down). Each quark has a corresponding anti-particle, so there are anti-up, anti-down, etc. A Meson is a combination of a quark and an anti-quark, while a baryon is a combination of three quarks. Protons are two up and one down; neutrons are two downs and one up.

Quarks are the smallest particles that you can find. Prof. Hawking has said in his book that Mesons and Quarks are energy particles that constitute the Protons and Neutrons. I suggest you read the "A Brief History of time". It is clearly explained.

what is anything? nobody knows what a quark "is" but they can infer that it exists by effects that it has. that also depends on whatever behavior the quark is exibiting being aimed at the observer, and the observer absorbs the energy of the behavior. if i shoot a laser beam past you and you attempt to observe it, you cannot! the photons aren't aimed at you. if you stand in the beam and look into it, youve observed the laser, but broken the experiment. its changed into brain light signals. if we use smoke, and you stand beside it, you only see the light that bounces off smoke particles, not the laser. At the subatomic level, observing an experiment drasticly changes that experiment. if you weren't around to observe the behavior of quarks, would they behave differently without your equipment absorbing their energy in order to give you a reading?
