Ha Ha, very funny. This is a pretty old one. As is stated below, you can't dig half a hole.
Now, if by some chance someone is playing with you (and not you with the rest of us), build a page to a page and a half of calculations. make it look convincing. Then put the answer at the bottom, neatly boxed and underlined.

I'm glad you asked! I have thought about going into business and you have just given me a great idea. I will dig wells where there is no water and then i will cut them up into post holes and sell them to farmers and ranchers.
