Well firstly, Right Click MY COMPUTER go to PROPERTIES. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Drivers. Make sure all the drivers are installed properly.

Then check the Volume Settings in the Control Panel, which is audio.

If everything is fine, then you should check the hardware, coz there must be some problem with it.

Try Every1's advice, if still having trouble, do the following:
Usually it's XP which gives Sound trouble depending upon Mboard.
Get ur Mother board CD and reinstall the Sound card. Usually Sound Card num is printed on the MBoard's cover. Eg:-Mine is P4m266 VIA823X. (note P4m266 is the Graphics card num & Via823x is the Snd CRd). Similarly ur MB's cover will also have thes num printed. Look for it. Depending upon the MB, number varies. If it's not printed on the cover then must read the MB manual.

I would check the obvious first, speakers are powered on, speakers are plugged into the computer. Do you have onboard sound or a sound card? Check device manager(start>control panel>system>device manager) and look for yellow exclamation points or red x's. If sound card try uninstall and reinstall of drivers, you can do this for onboard sound as well.
