I looked at the ingredients of my liquid solar cover that I put in my pool and it only said isopropyl alcohol. So I was wondering if anyone knows if I can just pour isopropyl alcohol in my pool to use as a cheaper liquid solar cover. Thank you for your time and feel free to respond even if you haven't tried it.

Not by itself. It's used in the dispenser and contents to keep the liquid from forming polymer chains, before it's released into the pool water. Upon release it floats to the pool surface and evaporates, not dissolves, as someone has said. The remaining liquid from what's released turns into a chemical chain, at the suface that slowly evaporates off. The actual chemical can be purchased, instead of buying those fish. The product is made of two ingredients. Stearl Alcohol, a powder, and Iso Propol Alcohol, rubbing alcohol.

The powder is mixed into warmed IPA to dissolve it.

A shot, say 4 fl oz, is added to the pool once a day, or via a plastic fish with a small hole in it, so it oozes out.
The mix floats to the surface and the alcohol gradually evaporates off, leaving a one molecule thick layer of stearl alcohol. This is the real blanket, preventing evaporation.

The alcohol is the solvent in which the active ingredients are dissolved. Alcohol will dissolve in the water, so it is of no use as a solar aid. You must have a molecular "cover" on top of the water. Unfortunately, those ingredients are not required to be listed, as is the alcolol.

The reason they use isopropyl alcohol is so that it won't feeze over the winter.

Oh, and don't pour alcohol in your pool.

Without additives the alcohol will just evaporate.
