The egg. If you base your observations on evolution, and that there was some form of chicken, not a chicken but a devolved form, that laid the egg. Think of it this way: You pass on traits to your babies. But with evolution, your babies would be different than you. So the first chicken wasn't born from a chicken, but the devolved form, one step backwards. It had to be in the egg before it became a chicken.

The chicken came first. God created all the animals in the world which means that the chicken was created first then the chicken produced the egg. If you read the Bible it will tell you about creation.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/question85.htm says it's the egg.

http://www.galactic-guide.com/articles/6R37.html says it's the chicken.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/05/26/chicken.egg/ is perhaps the most authoritative and recent; it says the egg. I'm going with this one!
