it is usually inside the frame rail just ahead of the gas tank. Find the fuel line coming from the tank and follow it. It is a round cylinder about 2 in. in diameter and 4 in. long. It requires a special tool to remove the clips holding it to the line.

The 1997 Taurus has three filtering locations for fuel. One in the tank (not serviceable, part of the fuel pump assembly), one in the line (rear of the vehicle, close by the fuel tank, has a flexible plastic line, requires special tool for removal) and one at the fuel rail (not serviceable)
If your vehicle is a flex fuel vehicle buy the filter at the dealer because a standard gasoline only filter will cause the vehicle to set a check engine light and will restrict flow, it will give the engine management system fits.
Good Luck...

It is under the car, fairly close to the fuel tank. Ford filters require a special tool to disengage the plastic clips that attach it to the line, available at your local parts store for about 15-20 bucks for the set.

should be right rear on the frame rail just before the fuel tank...
Ford has never put a filter in the gas tank (dodge does)
only thing in the tank is a (sock) and that's to screen huge particles and should last the life of the car...
Never heard of any filter near the fuel rail.. unless he is mistaking another screen...
and uh I work on them so I should know...

I'm not sure, but I know they love putting it where a novice can not get to it; like inside the gas tank. If you can't find it along the fuel line, that's probably where it is.
