I have been told that I have a nice singing voice. When I'm singing a Mariah Carey or a Kelly Clarkson song, I hit all the notes. My question is this: what makes a voice good? Hitting the notes, the vibrato, what? I would also appreciate advice on how to sing well (besides "sing from your diaphram".) Hiring a voice coach is not an option; I'd just like to perform better for community concerts and the like. Thanks!

There is not just one thing that makes a good singing voice. AND just because someone has a good singing voice does not mean that they are a good performer.
Pitch is very important. Hitting all of the notes and singing in key is definitely on the list. Vibrato is questionable. Not everyone need to use vibrato (unfortunately most people think they do). It really depends on the style of music. The tone quality of your voice also makes a difference. There are plenty of people who can sing all the right notes but sound bad because they have a horrible tone quality.
You may not be able to find a professional voice coach, but you may be able to find a voice major at your local university who would be willing to give you private lessons for cheaper than you would normally pay. The key is singing correctly. Singing from your diaphragm is just the beginning (and saying singing from your diaphragm and actually doing it are two very different things). If you don't sing correctly, you can actually do harm to your vocal chords and get arthritis of the larynx.
Just remember that good is relative and dependent on someone else's opinion.

I think both are poor singers. Yes they can hit all the notes, but so can Ann Wilson from Heart and the late Janis Joplin. You can sing along with Ann and Janis because you can actually understand what they are singing about. Mariah Carey, Witney Houstin and Kelly Clarkson hit notes just to hit notes. I think what makes a good singing voice is one that allows a person to be understood no matter the speed or pitch of the song.

I love singing it's kind of a passion of mine but to be a real;y good singer you need talent, a lot of guts and the ability to believe in yourself
