Its complex behavior, with complex sources and reasons.
Mine is anger, with myself, for something in me or about me that leads to pain-- classic emxaple ofmany people is appearance. If they dont look like what gets them attention and support ("you're pretty") they can go past the pain and become angered with themselves for whatever is bringing pain onto them. "I hate mylooks/face/body...." And they lose respect for what angers them and wht they hate-- actually, you cant respect something if you hate it in the first place, so you lose your respct for it first, then hate it--- that loss of respect can really escalate into blatant disrespect and disregard. Its a subliminal wish to destroy the source of pain/emotion. Mentally, it doesnt exist if you ignore it...

it's really an issue of not having the mentality to deal with those faults or whatever, like, how to accept and support themselves regardless of looks for example, that causes the pain not the looks. But it seems like the source to them-- the "trigger",so they attack themselves.
I think it may be this process but with different outtakes- ie, sex as degradation, to fit some person's ideals and win approval, or whatever....

And you can't just say its the result of abuse in the psat. That explains what invoked it, but it does NOT explain the MECHANISM of the porcesses. You can't understand or change anything if you dont understand how it works- and saying abuse caused it is basically finding an excuse for it since it gives you no authority and control over the process of self-degradation when in fact it IS your own responsibility/making-- even though the person doing that may truly not want to be doing it. (just a p.s.)

Promiscuity is a way to find attention to someone who probably feels very lonely due to their internal struggles. Chances are they are not forward with their true selves, and ths they may get a lot of "attention" but never get what they truly need in terms of support/affection/nutrturance because parts of their real self are hidden away or destroyed or detached. So the more the need arises, and the more it is NOT met, the stronger the need becomes anfd the more the person resorts to promiscuity, for example, so it all escalates....
not sure if I'm on the right page here. :)

Low self esteem. Possibility of emotional, physical sexual abuse in childhood. Actually the most damage is emotional abuse. People can heal from the physical scars. But if you are called stupid, ugly, fat and useless from the time you were born it is hard to outgrow it without help. So people try to find unhealthy ways such as addictions like booze, drugs and sex to numb out the pain.

Also, with the sex part, people learn to equate sex with love. So that can be another reason for the promiscuity. Or they are used to being used. They will do anything for anyone just to feel loved. They need help.

Usually result of a child of some kind of abuse. Take your pick of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse or a combination, children go into adulthood with the upbringing they got. MACHO MEN take notice: those strippers and postitutes you may frequent are in this category as well.
This is an old and wide spread problem. The solutions are complex. One is to work on prevention of child abuse to prevent it from even happening...in my opinion we need massive parenting classess..even making it mandatory. I think this is necessary because child abuse is STILL epidemic throughout the world. Next we need more effective and extensive treatment for the mental illness and drug and alcohol abuse that happens to adults who had been abused (and amazingly many of them don't even realize they have been abused!) Our mental health system and drug treatment in the USA is still not the greatest. It is variable throughout the country where in some areas it is sufficient but others terrible. This is nothing that the current administratiaon is concerned about (George W). Nor were any of the coyboy/movie stars of the present or past..such as Raygun or Arnordl....for them it is all about personal power and their money. But people put them in power and it is time for people to realize they are not voting for themselves when they make these humoungous mistakes in judgement. vote for real people with integetrity who care enough to make the giant social change that is necessary to transform our primitive society away from these awful problems: child abuse and its resultatnt problems of drug and alcohol abuse...as well as criminal behvirors.(Hint: Ralph Nadar could have started that!)

sometimes when people feel they do not get the kind of respect they feel they deserve they disrespect themselves. respect is a taboo in america, it's been replaced with suspicion just like empathy has been replaced by apathy.

i believe people intoxicate themselves because there is an emptiness that needs to be filled and self abuse sometimes distracts from that or could even replace that need with a new one. kinda like fighting a problem with a bigger problem.

Personal satisfaction or spiritual and physical exploration. What to you might be disrespecting yourself, might to another individual be the only way to discover truth. Even to the point of being a religious experience.

to me it would be anything that i did that went against my beliefs, which i have done on occasion and wasn't too happy with myself, maybe disrespect would be the word. in any case, i think every time we go against what we feel is right is cause for a very unhappy feeling within ourselves.
