is it just a PC term now? they are victims to me, nothing heroic about sitting in an office biulding and having a plane smash into you.

now the firemen are different, that is truly risky to run into a building like that, but would they have if they knew it might collapse?

First, I think they're rolled into one group, which includes the firemen, so they are all "hero's." Second, I think it's all hype to make their families feel better and to keep the need to fight the evil in our minds. Whether or not they would have run into the building if they knew it might collapse is a moot point. They did run into the building, all burning buildings have the possibility of collapse, and it did collapse on them. The fire, police, and other rescue personnel ran to the tragedy as most ran from it. That's what they do. Don't try to take their hero status from them. They truly deserve it.

Regarding the firefighters/Police etc... I believe a percentage would not have gone in if they knew the collapse was imminent. But I think most would do it again just hoping to help someone before the collapse happened.

The other posters are correct who say the word 'hero' is used both to console the families and to kindle nationalism. However there are definitely stories of true heroism among the civilians who died most notably on flight 93.

Sorry to say I feel the same way. I think it just helps the families feel better. The victims were just in the wrong place, where our firemen and police went in to save them.

I would not want to be a wife or mother who lost a son or husband so I will not venture to criticize.

you are right, they are not heros standard definition

why do some call the terrorists who hijacked the planes cowards
what they did may have been dispicable but it was certainly not cowardly

it comes down to people using words which they don't really understand

I believe they are called heros because their lives were taken on our soil at the hands of an adverse party.

There were people that didn't die and risked their own lives to try to save others. Read about it. It will make even a man cry.
