Both male and female goldfinches having been pecking at the windows (all different rooms) for a couple of weeks now. Sunflowers have been planted out doors to attract them for years, this year too, yet this is the first time we've seen this behavior.

The birds are actually pecking at their reflection, which they think is another bird. This is a territorial behavior - they are trying to drive the "other" bird away.

Bright lights near the windows will help them to see through the glass, instead of just seeing their reflections. You could also try moving the flowers and any feeders away from the windows.

Good luck!

Are they in need of water? The glass could be looking like water to them and they are pecking it to get a "drink." Also, birds don't realize that glass is actually solid and they will fly directly into windows and kill themselves and/or break the glass if a large enough bird.

They are on a secret spy mission for the evil squirrels. It may also be...They see their reflection in the glass, but I prefer a more paranoid explanation.

They are seeing the reflection and thinking those are flowers too. Happens a lot.
