I try to avoid horror novels because I have such an active imagination. Even so, when I was in college I read a book by Ellery Queen called "A Fine and Private Place." It was a mystery, not horror. The murdered character was obsessed with the number nine - he had only nine fingers. I don't remember much about the story, but I do remember being scared out of my wits for weeks. The bed in my dorm was the usual college single - barely wide enough to sleep in. I would lie awake and try to keep my hands and feet from hanging over the edge because I was afraid of some nameless monster under my bed. I knew better, in my head, but I couldn't convince the rest of my body that there was nothing to fear.

Peter Straub's books are scarier, by far, than Stephen King's. I read one Straub book that made me reach around the corner and turn the bathroom light on BEFORE I would enter the room. I did this for months. There was something living in the mirror when the light was off.

Though one of my favorite genres is horror, I've never had a novel scare me in the typical jumping-out-of-my-chair way. I suppose I'm pretty thick-skinned. :)
If you want a creepy horror novel, I highly recommend THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN by Christopher Golden. It involves a high school reunion, murder, changing memories, time travel, and a whole lot of twists and turns.
Psychological horror and suspense, something that shows me a different, dystopic way of society - those are scary in a wholly different way.
Along those lines, I recommend FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury and 1984 by George Orwell.

*Night* by Elie Wiesel. It scares me because it's based on truth. It's the account of a Jewish boy in a Nazi death camp. Fact has always seemed more frightening than fiction. To this day I can't watch America's Most Wanted on TV.

When I was a kid "Pet Sematary" by Stephen King scared the crap out of me. I was reading it in a dark parking lot, waiting for my dad, and I got to the part where the main character's kid comes back to life and tries to kill him.
Creepy as hell.

The Devil In Connecticut By Gerald Brittle, little kid get's possesed by a demon so it's a typical horror story. Supposedly, it's not true but i gave me the creeps! i think it's out of print though so getting a copy might be difficult.

Pet Semetary - by King. While I was reading it my cat jumped up on me and I screamed. I haven't read anything else of his since. Not a pleasant experience.
