When we moved into our house we had very dull ugly cabinets. We chose a light color paint and antiqued them with a dark glaze. It was a lot of work but well worth the effort.

Remove doors, wash doors and carcass w/TSP and paint using Kilz Colors (final color AND primer built into one coat!). Consider changing hardware, but be careful, this can be the most expensive portion of the update.
Check EBay for hardware prices (remember, will take knobs AND hinges)
Good Luck.
