It's easiest to begin with a solitary character; an unemployed, mid-aged man in New York, City, a single mother of four children from Chicago, or an eccentric businessman on a subway. Once you have this character, describe him or her: what is this individual's attitude and why, how does he or she view the world around them? It is usually easier to compare this character to someone you may know.

Now that you have a character, proceed to develop a situation. (Keep in mind that this is a short story, and should be 20,000 words at most.) Maybe the unemployed man from New York got rejected at his third job interview this week, or the single mother just met a handsome doctor. Or maybe the businessman is rather annoyed with the man sitting next to him in the subway car. Anything will do.

Lastly, remember that a short story should have only one crisis, one situation, when dilemma; more than one problem clutters the short story, and often ruins its effect.

I wish you the best of luck!

You need a beginning, a middle and an ending. The subject should be rather unclear with a vague ending - that seems to be the formula for a lot of short stories I've been reading. I'm not saying they were a good read, but they sold well.

Think about a book you would like to write but is too short to be a book.

Anything could make an interesting short story. Write about what you know best.

intro, body and conclusion. intro and conclusion must be related and supporting each other. the content must be as detail and short as it could be...... any subject is ok, as long as it hits or touches the readers.
