I just ask, why care so much about the unborn child and not for any other vulnerable, innocent. I am a father, I value life and children more than most and I don't like abortion either, but it seems very strange that some people would do anything to stop abortion, but innocent Iraqi kids that die in a bombing, or poor kids on the streets of Detroit are not really an issue. That's just life. If your answer is going to blindly slam my question, or me, just skip it. I ask a very fair question and expect mature, thoughtful answers.

You have a very good question. Human life is important, no matter at what stage of development it is. It is wrong to take a human life. I do not agree with abortion.
I think the reason many people seem to dwell on it to the exclusion of other forms of murder and other important issues is that this type of behaviour is a red herring. It detracts from the other forms of murder that are going on and are legally sanctioned. People are getting killed legally in other ways.
George W. Bush is a first rate example. He opposes abortion but not war. He should be calling for cease fires rather than invading countries and supporting the war efforts of other nations. War inevitably ends up in the loss of a lot of lives. It is hypocritical.

I care about all of it. Abortion - Got 3 kids. Abortion is not in my vocabulary.
The Iraqi kids - our servicemen and women bend over backwards to avoid hurting the innocents. That's what is slowing us down.
As for the kids on the streets of Detroit or in my city - my personal opinion is too many teenagers messing around, having babies, dropping out of school, having to work any job they can get, and spend little time with or even want the poor children. The key to getting these kids off the streets is family and education, but too many of them think it is "white" or not cool to do well in school. How do you make a teenager go to school if he/she doesn't want to. How many of these poor kids are being raised by a grandmother. Where are the father figures -- someone to set limits? My heart goes out to the little kids who can't help themselves. By the way, my husband and I make our lenten and Christmas donations specifically to inner city soup kitchens.

Some people just have such a narrow focus and are so closed mind that they live in tunnel vision. They don't / can't/ won't work on getting their priorities straight or may not have any at all. They get hung up on "The only issue that matters" and stick to it with all that they have. I too am a parent and don't agree with abortion, but I don't take any action on my stance. Abortion is a personal choice. And I agree that there are so many bigger more troubling issues facing today's society, you just hit the tip of the iceberg.

bad things happen in life some you have control over by the choices you make. some like a bomb falling on you is pretty much out of your control. but the children of Iraq and Detroit at least have a chance in life. A chance to make the world a better place. When the unborn child is robbed of life the rest of us is robbed of the hope that child would bring.

I have never met any one for whom that is the one and only issue.
I think the reason it is such a big issue for many people is because their is a clear obvious easy path to drastically reducing abortions (make it illegal)
There is no clear obvious easy path to drastically reducing the deaths of Iraqi children. It is not clear, for instance, that a pull out of U.S. troops would lead to less civilian deaths in Iraq. It might very easily lead to more.
There is noclear easy solution to reducing poverty in Detroit. We can't just pass a law against it.
I bet if you discuss it with anyone thoughtfully, without the antagonism in your question, you will find that almost nobody, on either side of the abortion concern, consider it the one and only issue

I can't answer your question but I agree completely with your statement. I can't think of a more personal and difficult decision that a woman has to make if it comes to that. Your children are lucky to have you for a dad. Take care.
P.S. I'm a father too.

Your point is very well taken. What are we to make of someone who kills a doctor because the doctor did an abortion? I suppose that people react most strongly to those things that seem to particularly affect them.

The respect of Life is the basis for the respect of the living. A world that undermines life will undermine the rights of the living. A world that appreciates life will respect the living.
