Your Hewlett Packard CD ROM drive may have failed. You can get it replaced with a DVD ROM burner really cheap. Take it to the shop. Get your floppy drive examined too. Good luck!

These are the things you can check. Is the CD-ROM light coming on? If so, then you need to reseat the cable. Open the unit, pull out both sides of the IDE cable (the cable that connects the CD-ROM to the motherboard). Reseat them. Start the computer and see if it recognizes the drive.
You may have to do the same on the floppy drive.
Turn off the computer and unplug it and wait a couple of minutes before you even open the case.
If this doesn't work, change the cable. If that doesn't work then the CD-ROM might be shot.
Power surges can cause such issues to happen.
Hope this helps. :)

Both your floppy disk and CD-ROM Drives are surely unserviceable and need to be replaced. Your CD-ROM lens must have been worn out and so with your floppy disk drive. Any other alternatives? YES, have your PC checked and cleaned. You must avoid your PC from place where it can acquire moist, dust etc which can cause damage to your PC. Also, check if your CD-ROM and FD Drives are branded, if not, I recommend you use the genuine products to have a better performance ahead. GOOD Luck.

virus. Microsoft has 150,000 of them.
Mac and Linux, and BSD have 0. Zero. none, nada...
Maybe that is why Yahoo runs FreeBSD? Why Microsoft.com and Hotmail.com run 30,000 Linux servers (15,000 Linux computers, each!)!
Eight times FASTER than they ran in Microsoft XP Pro, or Server 2003!!! Virus Free, hacker proof!
Get yours! Live CD with 1,600 games, programs, apps. loads in the CDrom, runs in RAM!
Upon boot up, it will either work (then, your problem really IS a virus, over on the Microsoft hard drive, that you aren't using!)
Clicking on the 'Install' icon will let you wipe the drive and get into a virus free OS that is built for the modern computer!

well there's two possibilities..
1. Auto-Run isn't on and the CD just isn't running.
2. Your drive is shot, in which case you'll need to open up the pc check if everything is connected and if it still doesn't work get a new one.

Does it do anything at all? If not, it may have gone bad and you'll need to replace it...they're so cheap.
Try different disks in it. Try clicking on the CDROM icon in Device Manager...under Hardware and try to update your driver...you have nothing to lose. Go to My Computer, then right click on Properties, then go to Device Manager, then Hardware, then scroll down to the CDROM and click on it....then right click on the cdrom, then update driver.
