They aren't real - they're scripted and are phony. They're stupid. There are too many of them. They need to be taken off the air and replaced with something worth watching.

They DO reflect reality but in no way reflect their titles or themes other than the cheap props in the background.
I would have thought that the purpose of the Survivor show would have been to determine who the best wilderness survivor was. Instead, it was a popularity contest.
The winning contestant on this show turned out to be someone who was actually on the middle ground as far as survival skills seeing as how the most skilled were voted out along with the worse because they were a threat to the mediocre.
Ultimately, I think reality shows defeat the purpose of television. Other than the news, my opinion is that television should serve the purpose of entertainment.
When I watch television I am making an attempt to escape reality, if only for the half- hour or so that my program of choice is on. I wish to be entertained, not reminded of how shallow and stupid can be- I see enough of that while watching the evening news.
Witnessing contestants on a reality show compete for popularity rather than making any real attempt to match the theme of the program is hardly entertaining.

Reality shows are cheep to make, easy to follow, and will be here for along time. It is dumbed down TV for the masses, and it appeals to our voyeuristic fantasies. They project a false reality that is more interesting then our own. It is mental masturbation for a short attention span consumer culture with an identity crises.

I can't stand it. I'm sick of that being all that's on tv anymore, and the way it's creating a society of people who just want to be famous (not for having done anything or being good at anything, just for being famous).
I found the first series of Big Brother (UK) interesting from a psychological point of view, but after that it seemed like the people they put in the house were just attention seekers looking to make a name for themselves.
I quite like American Idol and X Factor (UK) but that's more about a talent contest and less about "reality tv".

piss poor when TV producers can't figure out normal shows to put on. I really don't care who dances the best, who walks the fast, or seeing a three ring circus. Substance something with a plot, a story, horror, oh wait reality is the horror. what's with Sci Fi showing 1 show over and over again, different plots same show. Star Gate on and on and on. Thought they were diverse.

I enjoy the romance type reality shows (boy chooses girl; girl chooses boy)(even though out of all them only one marriage occurred), but it's still fun to watch.
Otherwise, I'm glued to American Idol and dancing shows.
