go-jo ( that gunk mechanics use to get grease off their hands)---we got 25+ years of wax of th kitchen chairs from my grandmother's house with. You might need some fine grade steele wool to make it a little easier.

Try Orange Glo...it cuts the greasey stuff and leaves the wood in nice condition.
